1. Family Background

Ayatollah Hajj Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei is the second son of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution and prominent Marjaʿ, Ali Khamenei. He was born in 1969 (1348 in the Iranian Solar calendar) in the holy city of Mashhad.

He received his early religious education at Madrasah Ayatollah Mujtahidi in Tehran. Later, he moved to the religious center of Qom to continue his advanced seminary studies.

During the Iran–Iraq War, he stood alongside the Mujahideen of Islam on the battlefronts and actively participated in what is known in Iran as the “Sacred Defense.”

He studied advanced courses in Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) and principles (Usul) not only under his father, Ali Khamenei, but also under distinguished scholars such as Javad Tabrizi, Hossein Vahid Khorasani, and Mousa Shubairi Zanjani, among other respected teachers.

For more than seventeen years, he taught Dars-e-Kharij (advanced seminary lectures). His classes were considered among the most active and well-attended in Qom, with hundreds of students participating.

His academic strengths include deep research in Fiqh, Usul, and Ilm al-Rijal, along with strong analytical criticism, structured intellectual foundations, independent thinking, and the presentation of modern scholarly perspectives.

An important aspect of his personality is his close relationship with military leadership and leaders of the Axis of Resistance, including Hassan Nasrallah and Qasem Soleimani.
